Jody turned to the small group who faced her. While she talked to Lu, Lori had managed to get Amber on the phone. She swore she was on her way to the hospital right now, but that was a lie. Lu would have said something if Amber had passed her on the road.
It was evident Anna had been raped, but there were still questions as to who had done it. Based on Loriâs report, the police were willing to pick up David. At the very least, for questioning. They wanted Amber to be out of the house first though. She had a history of becoming belligerent towards the police.
Jody wanted Lu to be here, with her, before any of that happened. If Lu saw the police heading towards the house, she was likely to turn around and follow them. Lu had a good head start though, so if she drove straight to the hospital, she would make it easily before Amber. And possibly be off the two-lane road before the police passed on their way to the house.
The nurse motioned for Jody and Lori to join her.
âSomeone hurt her pretty badly,â she whispered.
âDid she say anything?â Jody asked.
The nurse shook her head. âSheâs slept through most of it. I didnât have the heart to wake her for all of that.â
âGood,â Jody said.
Relief and then dread passed through her body when she saw Lu running down the hallway. She shared a look with Lori and could tell she felt the same way.
âHow is she?â Lu asked, out of breath and sweaty.
âResting,â Lori said.
Lu looked at Jody hard.
âYou know what Iâm asking.â
âIâm sorry,â Jody said.
Lori was crying silently and trying to hide her tears. When Jody looked at her, her own tears began to fall.
Lu swung to face Lori. She pointed her finger at her.
âFigure something out,â she said. She turned on her heel and stomped into Annaâs room. She sat on the edge of the bed and held Annaâs hand gently.
Jody and Lori watched her.
âIâm sorry,â Jody began.
âNo, you have nothing to be sorry for. I failed her. This is on me,â Lori said.
âNo, itâs not. You did all you could. I know that,â Jody reached for Loriâs hand. âLu knows that too. Sheâs angry at herself and at David, not you.â
Lori opened her mouth to thank Jody for her kind words but was interrupted by the sound of flip flops slapping the polished floor of the hospital. Amber was bustling down the hallway, carrying a tissue that she used to dab the sweat from her forehead. Her hair was wild and unbrushed. Her face looked like she had just woken up and her clothes were mismatched and dirty. It looked like she attempted to put makeup on but only drew black lines around her eyes. She had lipstick on her teeth.
She glared at Lori and Jody as she swept past them and into Annaâs room. Lori and Jody followed on her heels.
Amber stopped short and glared at Lu. Lu stood and took several quick steps toward Amber.
